Microcomputer Hardware

CMPT 115

Course Description

This course introduces students to the physical inside of a computer. It teaches the history and evolution of computer hardware, and even requires students to disassemble and reassemble a computer.

Artifact Description

One of the projects for this course was to do a presentation. For my presentation, I chose to demonstrate how to install and use Ubuntu, a distribution of Linux. I chose this for my artifact because I had to put more work into this assignment than any other assignment in the couse.
Unfourtunately, there is not a video of my presentation. This is the guide I used. At the top is a table with then-recent versions. I explained that the version number is always in the form of YY.MM, with YY representing the year the version was released, and MM representing the month.

I went on to explain the installation process, showing the screenshots and explaining the choices I made in the installer and why I made those choices. I finished by showing how easy it was to keep software up to date (and explaining the importance), and then briefly demonstrated its use (the computer on which I was presenting was running Ubuntu).

Course Reflection

Prior to taking this course, I had already learned about computer hardware and had a lot of experience disassembling and reassembling computers, along with troubleshooting and repairing them. While I already knew everything this course had to offer, I feel it was a well presented and thorough review about microcomputer hardware.
